At the end of the month, the sales report looks great. Then the wave of returns hits, and the profit in that report no longer resembles the money actually sitting in your account. If you sell on eMAG or any other marketplace, your return rate isn't an operational footnote β it's one of the biggest profit leaks that most sellers never measure at the product level.
How big the problem actually is
In Romanian e-commerce, return rates vary a lot by category, but they're rarely negligible:
Globally, the average return rate is above 20%. And the cost of a return doesn't stop at the returned product: shipping both ways, repackaging, inspection, and sometimes the item can no longer be resold as new. All told, every return separately costs between 15% and 30% of the product's value β money that disappears even when the customer gets a full refund and walks away happy.
Why products actually get returned
Before you can lower returns, it helps to know what's really causing them. The most common reasons, in order:
- Mismatch between the product and its photos or description β the leading cause, responsible for nearly 40% of returns.
- Wrong size β dominant in fashion and footwear, where size charts vary from one brand to another.
- Perceived quality doesn't match expectations β the customer expected something different, even when the description was technically accurate.
- Products that are hard to use, usually due to a lack of clear instructions.
- Late delivery β the customer gives up before the product even arrives.
- Damage in transit β responsible for around 12% of returns.
What you can actually do, without a big budget
The most effective interventions aren't about price cuts or stricter return policies β they're about reducing misunderstandings before the product reaches the customer:
- Accurate descriptions, not just attractive ones. Exact measurements, real materials, what's NOT included β fewer surprises, fewer returns.
- Real, visible reviews. Customers who read genuine reviews before buying return about 15% less often β reviews calibrate expectations better than any description can.
- 360Β° photos and product video. Can cut returns by around 22%, especially for products where shape and texture matter.
- Good-quality packaging. Reduces transit damage and, on top of that, improves the unboxing experience β a customer happy with the packaging is less inclined to look for reasons to return.
- A simple, digital return process. It sounds counterintuitive, but full transparency in the return process builds trust and, overall, reduces abuse β the customer doesn't feel they need to "fight" for a return to be taken seriously.
Why most sellers notice this too late
Standard eMAG reports and typical spreadsheets show gross sales, not return rate per product, per category, or over time. A product can look like a bestseller in the sales report while being exactly the product quietly eating your margin month after month β nobody has ever put the two numbers side by side.
That's why it matters to track return rate automatically, at the product level, with a clear signal the moment a product moves into risk territory β not manually, once a quarter, when it's already too late to change anything for that season.
